During National Volunteer Week, please say ‘thank you’ to our volunteers
This week’s guest blogger is Brenda Bushey, Director, Board & Volunteer Relations
If you work at Osler or have ever visited one of Osler’s hospitals as a patient, family member, or visitor, then you have likely have already met or worked with one or more of Osler’s 1,200 amazing volunteers. We simply couldn’t deliver the patient-inspired care we do, every day, without them!
You will find Osler’s volunteers welcoming patients and visitors at our entrances, selling items in our gift shops to help purchase much needed hospital equipment, contributing to planning on committees, cuddling babies in our neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), supporting seniors during their hospital stay, and offering support to patients in our waiting room areas.
Osler volunteers are people just like you and me. They come from all walks of life, bringing with them a deep understanding of the communities we serve and a range of skills, experiences, talents and insights that help enrich the Osler experience for everyone. They are:
- Young students keen to gain work experience, excited to explore career possibilities in health care, and interested in building new relationships;
- Members of our community who have enough flexibility in their schedule to share a few hours of their time during the day to give back to their community;
- Patients and family members who want to work together with staff and physicians to help improve the care and services we deliver to our community; and
Retirees, people eager to continue using their skills and talents in new and different ways to help out their local hospital.
No one can tell you why they volunteer or what they love most about being a volunteer better than the people who proudly wear the blue Osler volunteer vest or t-shirt. Listen and watch as they tell you in their own words what it means to volunteer at Osler.
Over the years I have had the great privilege of working with our volunteers and I know, firsthand, what a committed, caring and passionate group of individuals they are. Each and every one is a vital member of the Osler team, working behind the scenes and in partnership with Osler physicians and staff, to help deliver an exceptional patient and family experience.
It is National Volunteer Week so please take a moment to say ‘thank you’ to all those who give so generously of their time throughout the year. Thanking our volunteers is now easier with a new electronic card. Simply access the card here and drop a line to someone special that has helped you and your team make a difference in the lives of the people we serve.
To all of our volunteers, thank you for your commitment, dedication, compassion and ongoing support! And – happy National Volunteer Week!
